This is the perfect example of why we do what we do! It will move you to tears and cannot express any better what these animals do for the people they visit. Take a look at our own Caring Paws' experiences at Pier 94 from November and December 2001.
Caring Paws is one of many Chapters of Therapy Dogs International, Inc. serving Northwestern NJ (Morris, Sussex and Passaic Counties). We have expanded into southern New York and southern New Jersey! If you are interested in our work but not located any of these areas, please visit TDI for more information on a Chapter near you.
We
are a group of dedicated volunteers, who've trained and certified our dogs
for obedience and temperament to provide companionship and comfort for those
who are homebound, confined in a hospital or long term care facility. Our
dogs spend time with anyone who might benefit from a friendly bundle of fur.
Our dogs are taught basic obedience commands, manners and reactions to medical equipment, strange people, other dogs and unusual environments. They are tested on the above as well as for temperament. The dogs must not exhibit any signs of fear or aggression towards people or animals. In addition, they must be comfortable around medical equipment such as wheelchairs. walkers, crutches.
We visit nursing homes, hospitals, and outpatient care centers as per a predetermined schedule. We also participate in educational programs on dog safety and bite prevention. We host booths at community events to promote awareness of the importance of therapy dogs.
Our dogs
come in all shapes, colors and sizes - pure breeds and mixed breeds. Some
dogs perform tricks, some like to shake hands, some just like to sit quietly
and be pet and talked to. But no matter what our dogs do, the thing they do
best is bring smiles to those they visit.
